Yayah Sobeih was a 32-year-old journalist. He worked for the local news networks Sabaq 24 News Agency and Palestine Post, along with his brother Yousef. His Instagram account @yahyasobeih had 170,000 followers.
He was married and had two sons and a daughter; the latter was born on the same day of his martyrdom. He had refused to flee south, despite evacuation orders, to cover the news in northern Gaza.
He broadcast the hardships in northern Gaza: forced displacement, the great difficulty in obtaining food, and community kitchens.
He also reported on the Israeli army's destruction of mechanical equipment used for lifting weights. The lack of this equipment forced people to rescue themselves from the rubble with their bare hands, increasing the suffering of those trapped and contributing to their deaths.
Yayah and other journalists used to go to the very popular Tai restaurant, which, in addition to food and drinks, offered electricity and internet access. It was destroyed during the 2023 bombing and rebuilt during the January 2025 ceasefire.
On May 7, 2025, Yayah had gone there to celebrate the birth of his daughter, which took place that same day. The restaurant was very busy at 2:40 a.m. when two Israeli missiles hit it. A third missile hit a market in the adjacent streets. In total, 33 people were killed, including Yayah, and 155 were injured.
