Khaled El-Shawa was a 15-year-old boy living in the Al Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza.
The Al Shati refugee camp brought together Palestinians who had been expelled in 1948 from Yaffa (now part of Tel Aviv), Lod, and Beersheba. Since many of the refugees were from the fishing port of Yaffa, the camp was also located on the coast, and its main occupation was fishing.
Al Shati is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with 90,000 inhabitants in October 2023. Khaled lived there with his parents and four sisters.
The bombings in October 2023, in which Israel destroyed five mosques in Al Shati and killed an unknown number of Palestinians, forced Khaled's family to flee their home to seek refuge.
Khaled was using his bicycle to deliver food to an elderly neighbor who had been unable to travel and was still at his home in Al Shati.
On July 31, 2024, as Khaled was returning from delivering food to the elderly man, he was hit by an Israeli missile fired by a drone toward the car of Al Jaeera journalists Ismael Al Ghoul and Ramy El Riffi. His mother gave his name, saying, "My son is not a number."
