Israel accused him of belonging to Hamas, a claim denied by Al Jazeera. He was displaced about 20 times and survived several assassination attempts; he went hungry due to Israel’s siege, and lost many of his journalist friends, such as Ismael Al Ghoul and Hassan Hamad, who were also targeted by Israel.

With the January 2025 ceasefire, his family returned to Gaza City, and Hossam was able to reunite with them after 492 days. Israel broke the ceasefire in March 2025 and resumed the bombings and the blockade, particularly in northern Gaza.

On March 24, 2025, while at the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahia, he went to report on a new Israeli bombing; his car was struck by a bomb; Hossam was killed. The funeral and burial took place in Beit Hanoun and were attended by his family and fellow journalists, such as Anas Al Shariff.
