Sufian Abdul Rahman Othman Tayeh, 52, known as Abu Obama, was a prominent scientist from Gaza who was killed by Israel at his home in Jabalia along with many other members of his family on December 3, 2023.

His family was originally from Beit Daras, a village 32 km north of Gaza, which was destroyed by Israel in 1948. Its inhabitants were expelled and took refuge in Jabalia, northeast of Gaza City.

Sufian had attended elementary and secondary school in Gaza at UNRWA schools. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Garyounis University in Libya in 1994.

He earned his Ph.D. in theoretical physics (optoelectronics) from Ain Shams University in Egypt in 2007. From the time he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1994 until his death, he was a professor at the Islamic University of Gaza.

He collaborated with several foreign universities in Canada and India. He published more than 150 research papers and two books on optoelectronics. In 2023, he was appointed president of the Islamic University of Gaza.

Sufian was married; his wife was a chemist, and they had five children: their eldest son was a doctor, their eldest daughter was a dentist, and their second daughter was studying medicine. On December 3, 2023, Israel launched a brutal bombing raid on Jabalia. Sufian was killed along with 120 members of his family.
