Anas Jamal Al Sharif was a 28-year-old Al Jazeera journalist. His Instagram account, @anasjamal44, had 1.9 million followers and was suspended in November 2024.
His parents were refugees from the city of Al Majdal (renamed Ashkelon by Israel). They were expelled from their home and village by the Zionists in 1948. Anas was born in Jabalia in 1996.
In 2018, at the age of 22, he participated in the peaceful protests at the Gaza border, the Great March of Return. Israel fired from the separation fence, killing a total of 223 Palestinians. Anas was wounded by Israeli shrapnel in the abdomen during one of these demonstrations; he was one of the 15,000 wounded.
Anas studied journalism and graduated from Al-Aqsa University. He began working as a freelance photojournalist and, from 2023, as a reporter for Al Jazeera. He and his wife, Bayan, had a four-year-old daughter, Sham, and a one-year-old son, Shaleh.
He has been one of the most emblematic Palestinian voices in northern Gaza. He has also been one of the journalists constantly threatened by Israel. His house in Jabalia was deliberately bombed, and his father was killed along with other family members. Despite the threats, Anas refused to leave Gaza.
On August 11, 2025, Israel deliberately bombed the Al Jazeera journalists' tent near Al Shifa Hospital. Six journalists were martyred: five from Al Jazeera (Mohamed Qreiqah, Ibrahin Zahar, Mohamed Noufal, Moamen Aliwa, and Anas Al Sharif) and two other people.
