Heba Zagout was a 39-year-old Palestinian painter and teacher. She lived in the Al-Bureij refugee camp in Gaza. Her family came from the village of Isdud, which was destroyed, along with hundreds of others, by Zionist militias during the Nakba, the 1948 catastrophe.
She always cherished the memories her family passed down from her hometown; she imagined them as vivid and colorful, with orange and olive trees, cheerful houses, churches, and mosques.
She studied Graphic Design at the Gaza Training Center and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Al-Aqsa University in Gaza.
She had four children: Adam, Mahmoud Faisal, and Baraa. The painting of her with her children during the COVID quarantine is taken from her Instagram account @zagoutheba.
She taught drawing at an elementary school and drew to help her family financially.
On October 13, 2023, Israel bombed the Al Bureij refugee camp. Heba was killed along with two of her four children, Adam and Mahmoud.
