Ismail Al-Ghoul was a 27-year-old Palestinian journalist who worked as a correspondent for Al Jazeera in northern Gaza.
Ismael was born in the Al Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza. He studied journalism at the Islamic University of Gaza. He began working in print journalism and later moved on to television with Al Jazeera. He was married and had a one-year-old daughter.
During the first months of the genocide, he refused to travel south and covered news from northern Gaza, such as the murder of Hind Rahab in January 2024 and the siege of Al-Shifa Hospital in March 2024. During this siege, Israeli forces forced the journalists to undress, blindfolded them, tied their hands behind their backs, beat them, and held them for 12 hours. All of the journalists' equipment was destroyed.
On July 31, 2024, an Israeli attack killed Ismail Haniyet in Tehran, Iran. Haniyet was a leader of Hamas's political bureau; he came from the Al-Shati refugee camp, where Israel had killed more than 100 members of his family, including three children and four grandchildren. From his position in the Political Bureau, in 2017, he lived in Qatar and was a member of the delegation for the Gaza Peace Accords.
Haniyet's assassination prompted Ismail Al Ghoul and Al Jazeera cameraman Ramy El Rifi to travel to the Al Shati refugee camp to record the reactions of the citizens at the site where Ismail Haniyet lived. Israeli drones began firing missiles, prompting the journalists to evacuate the area.
As they sped off in a car, clearly marked with press insignia, American/Israeli precision-guided missiles directly hit the roof of the car, destroying both bodies. A 10-year-old boy, Khaled El Shawa, who was riding a bicycle, was hit by the blast. All three were martyred on July 31, 2024.
